Expansion of Pirate Site Blocking Granted to Hollywood in Australia

In a relentless pursuit against online piracy, Hollywood studios and Netflix are intensifying their efforts in Australia. Their latest triumph comes in the form of a fresh blocking order issued by Australia’s Federal Court, compelling local Internet providers to restrict access to a multitude of websites. Among the targets are several streaming portals, including Soap2day, Yomovies, and 123movies.

In the ongoing battle against online piracy, copyright holders worldwide often resort to pirate site blockades as their weapon of choice. Australia, too, has embraced this strategy, witnessing a surge in blocking injunctions in recent times.

This week, a formidable coalition comprising Hollywood studios, Netflix, and Village Roadshow secured the latest victory in Australia’s Federal Court.

A Fresh Wave of Blockades

Initiated in December, the complaint targets a staggering 34 sites and a whopping 54 domain names. Among the notorious targets are popular streaming portals like 123movies, Yomovies, Soap2Day, Myflixer, Vumoo, and 123Chill.

Additionally, the movie companies set their sights on ETTVCentral.com, formerly associated with the renowned torrent distribution group ETTV. However, its impact is minimal, as the site ceased operations owing to financial woes a few weeks ago.

The court’s decree casts a wide net, encompassing all major Australian Internet providers, including Telstra, Optus, Vocus, TPG, and Vodafone corporate groups. With a strict deadline of 15 days, these ISPs are mandated to block access to the listed domains and IP addresses, signalling a proactive stance against online infringement.

Furthermore, the court order mandates that Internet providers must notify blocked visitors about the legal proceedings behind the blockage. This entails redirecting users to a designated blocking page that informs them of the court’s decision due to copyright infringement.

The ongoing battle against online piracy often resembles a game of whack-a-mole. Despite blockades, pirate sites frequently resort to switching domain names to evade detection. However, copyright holders now have the authority to relay updated site locations to ISPs, ensuring that new domains are promptly blocked as well.

While the current order spans three years, the movie companies retain the option to request an extension if the targeted sites persist. Despite the theoretical opportunity for objection, none of the pirate sites have signaled any intention to contest the blocking measures.

Interestingly, many of the pirate sites slated for blockade gained traction following previous rounds of blocking. This cyclical pattern suggests a continuous cat-and-mouse chase between copyright enforcers and online pirates.

On the flip side, studies indicate that a significant portion of Australian pirates opt to surrender rather than seek alternative sources. However, a notable minority employs VPNs to circumvent the blocking measures.
